“South Hykeham is located immediately South of Lincoln, within Waddington MATZ and just out of its ATZ. Its two runways don't really stand out in winter, but the airfield can be located by reference to the closed RAF Swinderby (EGXS), 3 nm South-West along the A46, and RAF Waddington (EGXW), 2 nm due East. It is also at 16 DME on radial 120 from GAM VOR (112.8).
There is no ATC here, and calling Waddington Zone on 127.35 is mandatory since the circuit borders Waddington's ATZ; the easiest is to request Flight Information Service from far out. This proved no problem on a sunday, but Waddington radar was kept busy by FIS requests, so be considerate! GA traffic would be less intense on a weekday, but Waddington-based traffic might complicate things or delay approach clearance.
I was told on PPR that use of runway 13/31 wasn't recommended in this season, so runway 29 was used instead. As usual, nearby villages are to be avoided in the circuit. Runway surface was average, mainly due to lack of drainage after recent rains - it's probably much better in summer!
This is very much a private strip; there are no facilities whatsoever on site and the place was deserted. Landing fee is 5 Pounds. Waddington cannot receive line-of-sight VHF from ground level from every part of South Hykeham airstrip before departure.”
